Rhode Island School of Design offers an immersive model of art and design education with an emphasis on robust liberal arts studies and conceptually driven studio-based learning. It has consistently been ranked as one of the top educational institutions in the world for art and design. The affiliated Rhode Island School of Design Museum adds to the sense of studying in a real cultural hub with a strong heritage. The film, animation and video program has a strong emphasis on studio-based learning and encourages collaboration with peers to help find their unique artistic voice.
Shorts produced by students of RISD were screened at Cannes and the Sundance film festival this year. Notable alumni of Rhode Island School of Design include Seth MacFarlane, Martha Coolidge, Ryan Cunningham, Mary Lambert and Quentin Tarantino’s long-time director of photography, Robert Richardson, who won a lifetime achievement award from the American Society of Cinematographers. But perhaps the most famous graduate of Rhode Island is Gus Van Sant, whose latest offering Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot was met with much acclaim on the festival circuit.
