In Fall 2019 New York University will be opening its first permanent campus in Los Angeles, including new teaching facilities and student dorms, which is sure to add to the long-standing rivalry with the University of Southern California. However, its principal campus in Greenwich Village still offers great allure to the aspiring indie filmmaker hoping to delve into the hipster heartland of the east coast. Martin Scorsese is perhaps the most famous graduate of New York University’s MFA program and proves that you don’t necessarily have to study in LA to make it big in Hollywood.
Spike Lee is another New York University alumnus that adds to this point, he is also the current artistic director of NYU’s Graduate Film Program. With the new facilities set to rival those of the University of Southern California, New York University has already made its case as one of the leading institutes for nurturing future film talent. In addition to the up-coming expansion close to the Brea Tar Pits in California, a new state of the art performance center is set to open in on Mercer Street by 2021, becoming the largest building in the New York campus.
